Unit 3. Assessment Criteria 3.1.1. Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. Effective communication is important when developing positive relationships with anyone, as it builds trust and establishes rapport between the people who are communicating with one another. Respect is an important element in effective communication, and the development of a relationship. Actively listening to another person’s point of view or opinion, remembering personal details, showing an interest and responding in an appropriate manner, all show that you have listened and placed importance upon what has been said, which leads to positive relationships and respectful, effective communication. Effective communication, and respectful relationships are vital when talking with children, young people, and adults as they both allow accurate gathering of information and feelings and the subsequent passing along of any issues that may need to be followed up on.
